Swimming and water safety is a statutory part of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in UK primary schools. By the time your child leaves primary school at the end of Year 6, the expectation is that they will be able to demonstrate three key skills:
Swim Competently: Your child should be able to swim at least 25 metres (the length of a standard swimming pool) competently, confidently, and proficiently.
Use a Range of Strokes: They must be able to use a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.
Perform Self-Rescue: Crucially, they should be able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations, equipping them with essential life-saving knowledge and skills.
At PSJ, pupils typically start their swimming journey beginning in Year 3, beginning in the summer term. Pupils who have not met the competency criteria (25 metres) by the end of Year 3 will continue to access swimming lessons until they have achieved this.
